Hortensia
2012

Screenprint made with water-based paste which contains the extract of cyanogenic glycosides of Hydrangea flowers.
When Hydrangea (Hortensia) plant is "injured" enzymatic reaction is triggered and toxic hydrogen cyanide is released from cyanogenic glycosides that are present in different plant parts. During extraction of cyanogenic glycosides from the plant flowers and preparation of screenprint paste enzymes are inactivated, while glycosides stay intact and do not degrade.

Intrinsic toxicity of the work lies in the possibility of hydrogen cyanide release if acid comes in contact with the print (i.e. if strong acid is spilled on the work by the observer, the work will become poisonous).
Antidote - toxic cyanide ions can form complexes with ferric ions and in such manner can be transformed in non-toxic form known as Prussian blue (blue dye pigment).
